Presbyterians & Friends at Work– Real Food Farm, Baltimore, MD

Sat. May 18, 2013

The Mission & Witness Committee thanks our multitude of spirit-infused Real Food Farm volunteers – 25 folks in all!  We had a busy day of urban farming under the direction of Farmer Tyler Brown, son of Brad and Kathy Brown.  The Farm is located in the heart of Baltimore city and is a non-profit dedicated to getting real (healthy) food to neighborhoods who lack access to fresh vegetables and fruits.

Volunteers were assigned a multitude of tasks for our morning of community service.  Zach, of RFF, was very pleased to have help weeding the vegetable rows from Tom Chase, William and Daniel Marsh, and Rev. Debbie Parsons.  Barney McCracken finished building the new compost bin that Brad Brown initiated and then joined the carpentry crew of Rick Stone, John Rippengale and Tony Poisson who were improving the doors on three hoop houses.  John Evans worked around the high tunnels too.  There were specs of blue paint to be seen on many volunteers including Spencer Wilcox, Pam, Owen & Cullen Poisson as they tackled the painting of the new compost bin and all the raised planter boxes along the walking path.  Some blue was also seen on the very dedicated picnic table painters – Becky Hutchings, Tom Hutchings, Nicole Morgenthau and Brenda Bengtson.  These tables were built by the LPC mission team last year and are much used and appreciated by staff and volunteers as they gather for lunch and staff meetings!  In spite of the challenges of finding good paint brushes and working on scaffolding (or underneath scaffolding!), another group tackled the challenging job of finally finishing the staining of the gathering shed, built by Brad a few years ago. So special thanks to Kathi Stone, Jo Anne Wright, Carla and Eddy Holland.  Cameron and Brice Hutchings finished painting and then weeded and mulched the perennial bed next to the Gathering Shed.

At noon everyone was persuaded to stop working and join in the pot-luck lunch with wonderful fresh from the farm salads provided by the young chefs/interns of RFF and the always generous contributions of the LPC team to the picnic. Farmer Tyler was impressed, as usual, by the volume and value of tasks accomplished by the LPC team.  He and his farm staff send a very heart-felt THANKS to all our volunteers for their hard work around the farm yard!
